Alternanthera

Brazilian Spinach

Brazilian Spinach (Alternanthera sissoo) is a staple in our gardens at Fig Field Farm. It is a versatile plant, being able to grow in the house, garden, and water garden! Some people use this plant as an edible herb, similar to common spinach, though we recommend thorough and vigorous research on this plant before attempting to consume it. We use it strickly as an ornamental.

Tight and compact, this Alternanthera is low growing and does not spread from runners. It will stay where you put it. Being a perennial, it will come back every year in zones 8 and warmer.

Looks great when paired with Little Ruby Alternanthera, or similar brightly colored plants!

Little Ruby

Little Ruby is an Alternanthera that loves full sun! The brighter the light you give this plant, the darker purple-red the leaves and stems become! Many people mistake it for Chinese Witchhazel because of its similarly colored foliage. This perennial is hardy to Zone 8.

This beautiful compact, bush like Alternanthera loves water, and can actually be grown as a water garden or pond plant! This plant is not drought hardy, so it requires regular watering to stay healthy. Pairs well with tropicals to make a memorable impression! We like to plant them with orange Marigolds to create a dramatic color contrast combination!
